Is Belgrade graffiti surprising? You Bet Your Life.

Belgrade graffiti features many famous faces, but this one took me by surprise. Groucho Marx? The person who did this was probably born after 1980. Groucho Marx died in 1977. But I must say, Mr. Marx still makes me smile.

I may be able to shed some light on this. You see, there’s an Italian horror comic hugely popular all over ex-Yugoslavia called Dylan Dog.
    More details here:

Anyway, Dylan, paranormal private investigator, has a sidekick named Groucho, who is “an impersonator whose character became his permanent personality”. In other words, for all intents and purposes he is Groucho Marx. He is certainly drawn that way.

My theory is that ere it not for the comic, Mr. Marx probably wouldn’t feature on the above graffiti. Then again, I might be wrong. 🙂

  2. I love this explanation-thanks for sharing it. I’ve never heard of Dylan Dog but it makes a lot of sense. I doubted there were many old-school film buffs who moonlighted as taggers. (though in Belgrade, I probably shouldn’t make such assumptions…)
